Which kind of properties are considered half board and what does that mean?
Half board accommodation typically means that you get a room with a bathroom and breakfast included. Sometimes other meals are included or offered. These are great for a quick trip when you need a base. Most provide quality wi-fi, daily cleaning and fresh towels. Others are more upmarket and can offer a host of services in a similar fashion to hotels.
The overwhelming factor when staying in one of these half board properties is that you will typically be met by the owners or full time managers. This can make the stay very personal for you and your group. You can pick up great local recommendations for places to visit, dine and drink.
B&B
Bed and breakfast accommodations offer a private room, private bathroom and a breakfast each morning. The rooms are typically part of a family home and you get the privilege of being part of the family for a few days. Across many parts of the world you will find great B & B’s in cities and even on farm holdings set amongst unspoilt countryside.
Guesthouses
Similar to bed and breakfasts, guesthouses are normally part of the family home. They tend to offer more rooms and some even offer lunch or an evening meal. A communal gathering area allows you to meet with the hosts and other guests. These can be very economical or extremely exclusive.
Lodges & Inns
Lodges and Inns typically have onsite restaurants and a bar. Many will offer inclusive breakfasts. Some offer recreational amenities and hosts or managers will be more than willing to book local activities and tours. In Europe lodges and inns can be several hundred years old and historical icons.
Hostels
Hostels are typically family run accommodations in Europe which can offer everything from the bare basics through to extremely pleasant accommodation and amenities. Globally, hostels are popular with travelers and back packers as they are known to be affordable in many parts of the world. The accommodations can be shared rooms with bunk beds or private suites with their own bathroom. Do not be put off by it being called a hostel. There are some gems out there.
